A Pretty Good Library Week

By Steve Thomas
So, I'd say -- horrible pollen allergies I HATE YOU SPRINGTIME IN RICHMOND AHHCHOO and bronchitis aside -- this week is a pretty good Library Week, mostly.
  • My husband and I close on our house in Byrd Park first thing tomorrow morning...after which we will promptly start painting and wallpapering.
  • Peter Jackson (blessedbehisname) posted a video of the first day of filming for The Hobbit, which means that today I feel a giddy 15-year-old sense of excitement.  I remember printing out any LOTR set photos I could get my teenage hands on when the first film was still being made.  I was -- ahem, am -- a huge Tolkien nerd, and was one long before the films came out (well, "long before" in relative terms...I was a teen when the film came out, so the number of years I had in my short life to become a fan weren't that many, but still, YOU GUYS....I totes didn't start liking LOTR for Orlando Bloom, thankyouverymuch).  (I started liking it for Sean Bean, DUH.)  So anyway.....The Hobbit!  Squeak!  I feel the need to suddenly create a Tolkien-themed book display!  And show off my Tolkien tattoo!  (Ohwait, against policy.  Even during Library Week.)
  • For Library Workers Day (the 12th, and yes I DID notice nobody threw me a parade or added a bust of me to Monument Ave, what the hell?!), I got budget approval for giving my team B&N cards.  Morale boosting, ahoy!
  • It was a super slow day at the library yesterday...abysmally slow.  So, I took the time to become more familiar with our collection, which meant I read The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates
    from cover to cover.
  • We got a shipment of new books in today, and the Waiting for "SUPERMAN": How We Can Save America's Failing Public Schools (Participant Guide Media) book came with a $15 DonorsChoose gift certificate....so I helped out this Richmond school with its "Making Connections in Science Through Reading" campaign.  Every little bit helps, and math/science is such a problem area in today's schools.
  • The exception to this week's pretty-goodness: all of the databases ran at a snail's pace when I tried to give an information literacy presentation yesterday...you know, during Library Week, the time when we're supposed to be extra-awesome.  Womp womp.

  1. I saw your comment on ByrdPark.net and decided to check out your blog. Congrats on your new house. Can't wait to meet. And you're a Tolkein fan. Fun. I just read a big picture-book version of The Hobbit to my 3year old. Hit me up to get the dirt on the inner-workings of your new neighborhood at byrdpark@gmail.com. Cheers.
