Perennial outrage

by Terry Fan

Chick-fil-A reaffirms homophobia, Pope reaffirms being Catholic, bear reaffirms waste management habits in the woods...

I understand outrage and share in it. But I also never quite understand the perpetual sense of surprise when it comes to Chick-fil-A expressing these beliefs. They're buddies with Focus on the Family and they're closed on Sundays and they've made their various stances pretty well known over the years. I guess my question is, while I understand the outrage, am I missing something else? Are people genuinely just discovering this about Chick-fil-A? It just feels like every six months or so I'm scratching my head about people's reaction and am seeing recipes for making their sandwiches everywhere.  I don't mean to belittle those who are just finding out exactly, but it's just a little bemusing to me.  Of course, people dressing up as cows just to get a free sandwich is also a little bemusing to me, too.  So maybe I just don't get it.  (My brothers both worked at a Chick-fil-A when they were teenagers, and always came home smelling like maybe I just am scarred for life and will never understand the joy of those.)

  1. I think part of the outrage at Chick-fil-a is that if we stay silent, like whatevs we figured that's how they felt then it feels like we're okay with it, or at least can ignore it. I guess it feels better to make some noise about it than to just say "go figure". Although, I think there are people who genuinely had no idea about their Christian-ness.
